Sweeney Todd, also known as Benjamin Barker, is a fictional character who originated in a Victorian "penny dreadful" serial. He gained broader recognition through various stage and screen adaptations, most notably Stephen Sondheim's 1979 musical, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
Barker, a skilled and respectable barber, was unjustly imprisoned in Australia by the corrupt Judge Turpin, who desired Barker's wife, Lucy. Upon escaping and returning to London under the alias Sweeney Todd, he seeks revenge on Turpin and those who wronged him.
Operating a barber shop above Mrs. Lovett's pie shop on Fleet Street, Todd's desire for vengeance consumes him, leading him to murder his customers.
